“The only constant is change,” Heraclitus observed 2,500 years ago. Today, we marvel and fret over the ever-increasing pace of change in the digital age. If change is so inevitable and enduring, why does it often seem so hard? Strategic planning consultants, business authors, and motivational speakers have made an industry out of advising how to initiate and sustain effective change. Articulating relevance, overcoming complacency, creating a vision for the future, developing a clearly-defined plan, earning buy-in and developing an effective team, and sustaining motivation through inevitable setbacks are discussed by three executive directors who have been charged with moving organizations in new directions.
